This course provides specific clinical interventions, actionable strategies, and sample lines of communication to help therapists integrate diversity and implicit bias awareness into couples therapy without overemphasizing these factors. The approach ensures that cultural and identity-related considerations enhance, rather than overshadow, the couple’s unique relational needs.
Define implicit and explicit bias and their impact on couples therapy.
Identify how diverse identities (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status) shape therapeutic dynamics.
Apply three evidence-based strategies to mitigate implicit bias in clinical practice.
Identify at least three risks of overemphasizing implicit bias and diversity in couples therapy.
Apply strategies to integrate cultural competence and bias awareness into couples therapy while prioritizing clients’ presenting issues and relational goals.

Dr. Ginny Wright is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with adults, children, families and couples. With the title of Discernment Counseling Master Practitioner, she is endorsed to provide training and consultation for professionals offering discernment counseling. Dr. Wright is a frequent podcast guest and contributor for divorce-related media outlets and offers workshops to professionals seeking additional training in couples work, divorce and discernment counseling. She is also a speaker for the Doherty Relationship Institute, LLC.
