WORKSHOP: Working with Divorce Ambivalent Clients

Virtual Workshop

Friday, September 12, 2025

8am - 11am CST

3 CE Hours

Did you know ...

... that each year 22% of all married individuals have SERIOUS divorce ideation? Although most do not go on to get divorced, when one spouse is seriously considering divorce, the stress on both spouses is palpable.

Therapists see it

all.the.time.

Despite being so common, therapists receive virtually no training in how to respond to clients who are in the throes of divorce ambivalence and we find ourselves scrambling to provide appropriate guidance and referrals.

In this workshop you will learn how to effectively help these clients without:

√ Over-focusing on the client's perspective without considering the bigger system

√ Falling into the trap of diagnosing a spouse from afar

√ Inadvertently making marriage-undermining statements when we don't know what else to say

About the Workshop

This workshop is intensely practical and offers participants many sample lines of communication to use with clients. We discuss key strategies to avoid 1) getting stuck in individual therapy that lacks forward progression or 2) suggesting couples therapy when one or both partners are not motivated to work on the marriage.

In addition, therapists learn concrete skills for making referrals, when appropriate, for discernment counseling, a brief model designed specifically for couples when one partner is leaning out of the marriage while the other wants to preserve it.

Learning Objectives

1

Identify at least 4 clinical challenges unique to working with

divorce-ambivalent clients

2

Identify three common emotional stances of a leaning-out individual.

3

Identify four or more negative interaction patterns common to couples in crisis

4

Name the goals of discernment counseling, including the three path outcomes.

5

List three scenarios when a referral to discernment counseling would (and would not) be appropriate.
